Automated anomaly detection with process mining in QA pipelines

Let me break down our complete implementation approach for automated process mining in QA pipelines.

Automated Process Mining Integration: We integrated Mendix Process Analytics directly into our CI/CD pipeline using the Process Mining API. Every automated test execution streams process events to a dedicated QA process mining instance. The integration happens at three levels: microflow instrumentation that emits custom process events with test context metadata, API calls from our test framework that start/stop process mining sessions per test suite execution, and webhook triggers that notify our dashboard when anomalies are detected during test runs. The key architectural decision was separating QA process data from production - we maintain distinct process mining environments to avoid contamination.

Anomaly Detection in Test Logs: For baseline establishment, we use a hybrid approach. Initial baselines come from production process patterns for established features, but we maintain QA-specific baselines that account for test data characteristics. The anomaly detection algorithm compares each test execution against three dimensions: process path conformance (did the process follow expected sequences), performance benchmarks (execution time per process step), and resource utilization patterns (database queries, API calls per process instance). We’ve configured sensitivity thresholds that flag deviations exceeding 25% from baseline for path conformance and 40% for performance metrics. The system generates automatic alerts when anomalies are detected, categorized by severity based on deviation magnitude and affected process criticality.

Visualization of Process Deviations: We built custom dashboards on top of Mendix Process Analytics that are specifically designed for QA stakeholders. The visualization layer includes process flow diagrams with deviation highlights showing where test executions diverged from expected paths, heatmaps indicating process bottlenecks discovered during testing, trend charts tracking anomaly frequency across test suite executions over time, and drill-down capabilities that link process deviations back to specific test cases and code commits. For development teams, we integrated process deviation summaries directly into pull request comments - when automated tests run on a PR, any detected process anomalies are automatically posted with visual process maps showing the deviation. This immediate feedback loop has been crucial for adoption.

The implementation effort was approximately 3 sprint cycles: first sprint for Process Analytics integration and event instrumentation, second sprint for anomaly detection logic and baseline establishment, third sprint for visualization and CI/CD integration. The ROI became apparent within 2 months when we caught a critical process logic bug in a payment workflow that had passed all functional tests but exhibited an anomalous execution pattern. That single catch justified the entire implementation investment. We now consider process mining an essential layer in our testing strategy, complementing functional tests rather than replacing them.

We use a combination approach. Mendix Process Analytics captures standard process events automatically, but we augmented it with custom event logging in critical microflows.
