Automated MBOM management workflow implementation in Teamcenter 12.3

I’d like to share our successful implementation of automated MBOM management workflows in Teamcenter 12.3 that significantly improved our manufacturing data accuracy and reduced manual processing time. Previously, our MBOM creation and synchronization with ERP systems required extensive manual intervention, leading to errors and delays. We designed automated workflows that handle MBOM generation from EBOM, validate manufacturing data, and integrate with our SAP ERP system for seamless data exchange. The implementation included workflow automation for routine MBOM updates, external system integration for real-time validation, and data accuracy checks at multiple workflow stages. Our workflow automatically validates component sourcing, manufacturing processes, and cost data before releasing MBOMs to production. Since deployment, we’ve achieved 95% data accuracy improvement and reduced MBOM processing time from 3 days to 4 hours. I’ll detail the workflow architecture, integration patterns, and lessons learned.

The time reduction from 3 days to 4 hours is significant. How did you identify which MBOM processes were suitable for automation versus requiring manual intervention? Did you implement different workflow paths for standard products versus complex assemblies? Also, what change management approach did you use to transition manufacturing engineers from manual MBOM creation to the automated workflow system?

This implementation aligns with initiatives we’re planning. What were the major technical challenges you encountered during deployment? Did you face issues with workflow performance when processing large MBOMs with thousands of components? How did you handle the initial data migration and validation of existing MBOM structures before activating the automated workflows?

The 95% accuracy improvement is remarkable. I’m curious about your data accuracy validation approach. What specific checks does your workflow perform at each stage? Do you validate against manufacturing standards, component availability, or process capability? How do you handle situations where validation identifies data discrepancies - does the workflow automatically correct simple errors or always route to human review?
