Option 2: Custom ETL batch job running every 2 hours to extract, transform, and load BOM deltas
I’m leaning toward the API approach for real-time sync and better data consistency, but our ETL team argues that batch processing is more reliable for error handling and easier to maintain. The API route would require building retry logic, handling rate limits, and managing connection failures. The ETL approach gives us a proven framework but introduces a 2-hour data lag.
What have others experienced with these integration patterns? Are there hidden maintenance costs or reliability issues we should consider before committing to one approach?
One major advantage of ETL that often gets overlooked is the ability to validate and cleanse data before it hits Blue Yonder. With real-time API calls, you’re pushing data immediately, which means any data quality issues in your ERP propagate instantly. Our ETL pipeline includes validation rules, duplicate detection, and data enrichment steps that catch about 8% of records that would have caused issues downstream. That 2-hour lag actually gives us a quality gate. You could implement similar validation with APIs, but it adds complexity to your integration layer.
We went through this exact decision last year. Started with ETL batch processing because it was familiar to our team, but eventually migrated to event-driven API integration. The real-time sync proved critical for our manufacturing scheduling accuracy. However, the API approach required significant upfront investment in error handling and monitoring infrastructure. We had to build a dead letter queue system and implement circuit breakers to handle API failures gracefully. If you don’t have that infrastructure already, the ETL route might be more pragmatic initially.
Maintenance tradeoffs are real. Our API integration requires constant monitoring - we have alerts for rate limit warnings, failed requests, timeout spikes, and data validation errors. The ETL job runs on a schedule and we only look at it when it fails. However, debugging ETL failures can be painful because you’re dealing with batch logs and large datasets. API integration gives you granular visibility into each transaction, making it easier to identify and fix specific issues. The question is whether your team has the DevOps maturity to support real-time integration monitoring.
Think about your future state too. If you’re moving toward event-driven architecture and real-time supply chain visibility, the API integration path aligns better with that direction. ETL batch processing is increasingly seen as legacy approach. That said, batch processing has 30+ years of proven patterns and tooling. Your choice should factor in your team’s skills and your organization’s architectural direction.
