We’re designing a content delivery architecture for a media streaming platform that will serve video content globally. We’re evaluating two approaches and would love to hear experiences from others who’ve made similar decisions.
Option 1: OCI CDN integrated with Object Storage - Store all video files in Object Storage buckets and use OCI CDN as the delivery layer. This seems straightforward and cost-effective.
Option 2: OKE cluster with NGINX ingress controllers deployed across multiple regions, pulling content from Object Storage and caching locally. This gives us more control over caching logic and routing.
Our requirements: 10TB+ of video content, 500K daily users globally, need for adaptive bitrate streaming, and cost optimization is critical. We’re already using OKE for our application services, so extending it for content delivery could simplify our architecture.
What are the real-world tradeoffs between these approaches in terms of scalability, cost, and operational complexity?
CDN scaling is transparent and automatic - that’s the whole point of using a CDN. OCI’s edge network handles traffic spikes without any configuration on your end. You don’t need cache pre-warming for most scenarios; the first user request populates the cache, and subsequent requests are served from edge locations.
With OKE, YOU are responsible for scaling. Even with HPA, there’s a delay while pods spin up, and you’re paying for baseline capacity to handle normal traffic. During spikes, you might still see performance degradation while Kubernetes scales.
The operational complexity of managing caching infrastructure across regions shouldn’t be underestimated. CDN gives you that globally distributed caching layer without the ops burden.
Thanks for the insights. The cost argument for CDN is compelling. We don’t need dynamic content assembly - our videos are pre-encoded in multiple bitrates and stored as HLS segments.
One concern with Object Storage + CDN: what happens during high traffic spikes? Can the CDN scale transparently, or do we need to pre-warm caches? With OKE, we could use HPA to scale pods automatically based on traffic patterns.
We went with OCI CDN + Object Storage for our video platform (similar scale to yours) and it’s been excellent. The integration is seamless - you just point CDN to your Object Storage bucket and it works. Costs are predictable: storage fees + egress through CDN, which is cheaper than standard Object Storage egress.
The OKE approach would give you more control but at significantly higher operational cost. You’d need to manage Kubernetes clusters in multiple regions, handle cache invalidation logic yourself, and monitor node health. For content delivery, that’s overkill unless you have very specific requirements that CDN can’t handle.
I’ve worked with both architectures. The OKE approach makes sense if you’re doing dynamic content assembly or personalization at the edge. For example, if you need to insert user-specific ads into video streams or generate manifests dynamically based on user profiles.
For pure content delivery of static video files, OCI CDN is the better choice. It’s built for this use case, handles cache purging well, and integrates with Object Storage lifecycle policies. You can set up intelligent tiering for older content automatically.
One hybrid approach we use: CDN for video delivery, but OKE services handle the manifest generation and adaptive bitrate logic. Best of both worlds - let each service do what it’s designed for.
