Enhancing Shipment Tracking and Carrier Selection for Supply Chain Reliability

Our logistics team is focused on improving the reliability of our outbound shipments and controlling transportation costs. We want to enhance our shipment tracking capabilities to gain real-time visibility and proactively manage exceptions. Additionally, selecting the right carriers is critical, but we face challenges balancing cost pressures with service quality and reliability. I’m interested in discussing best practices for carrier evaluation and selection, how shipment tracking data can inform these decisions, and how freight audit and customs documentation processes support overall shipment accuracy and compliance.

We implemented GPS tracking and integrated it with our TMS about a year ago. The real-time visibility has been a game-changer-we can see exactly where every shipment is and get alerts if there’s a delay or route deviation.

This allows us to proactively notify customers of delays and take corrective action (e.g., reroute, expedite) before it becomes a bigger problem. We also use the tracking data to measure carrier performance-on-time delivery rate, transit time variability-which feeds into our carrier selection process.

Real-time shipment tracking has transformed our customer communication. We can proactively notify customers of shipment status, delays, and expected delivery times. This has reduced inbound customer inquiries by 30% and improved customer satisfaction scores.

We also use tracking data to identify systemic issues-if a particular lane or carrier consistently has delays, we escalate it internally and work with the carrier to resolve it. This proactive approach has strengthened our customer relationships.

Integrating shipment tracking with carrier performance analytics has given us powerful insights. We can see which carriers perform best on specific lanes, which ones have the most delays, and which ones are most cost-effective.

We use this data to optimize our carrier mix-assigning shipments to the best carrier for each lane based on cost, speed, and reliability. This has improved our on-time delivery rate by 8% and reduced transportation costs by 6%.
