Our organization’s sustainability officer is working with supply chain leadership to establish governance around sustainability metrics and advance circular supply chain initiatives. We face challenges in defining meaningful metrics, integrating sustainability into supply chain finance decisions, and driving cross-functional collaboration.
I’m interested in how to govern these efforts strategically to ensure measurable environmental impact, compliance with regulations, and alignment with our broader corporate responsibility goals.
Navigating evolving sustainability standards and regulations is complex. We track regulatory developments in key markets-EU Green Deal, California climate disclosure laws, SEC climate rules. Governance should ensure that our sustainability strategy and reporting align with current and anticipated regulations. We’ve established a compliance committee that reviews regulatory changes and assesses their impact on supply chain operations. Proactive compliance reduces risk and positions us as a leader in sustainability.
Implementing circular supply chain strategies involves redesigning products for reuse, establishing reverse logistics networks, and partnering with recyclers. The practical challenges include managing product returns, ensuring quality of refurbished products, and coordinating across multiple stakeholders. We’ve piloted a product take-back program and learned that governance is critical-clear policies on returns, refurbishment standards, and revenue sharing. The circular model requires a shift from linear thinking to lifecycle thinking, which is a cultural change.
Defining relevant metrics is the first challenge. We’ve focused on carbon footprint (Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions), waste diversion rates, water usage, and sustainable sourcing percentages. The governance framework includes quarterly reporting to the board and annual sustainability audits. The challenge is data collection-getting accurate emissions data from suppliers requires strong collaboration and sometimes contractual requirements. We’ve invested in carbon accounting software to streamline data collection and reporting.
