Succession planning data sync times out when pushing large datasets via REST API

We’re hitting consistent 504 gateway timeouts when syncing succession planning data quarterly. Our organization has around 8,500 employees and we’re trying to push succession plan updates for approximately 1,200 key positions through the Dayforce REST API.

The sync process works fine for smaller batches (under 200 records) but fails when we attempt the full quarterly update. We’ve tried increasing the API timeout settings but the issue persists. Looking at our current implementation, we’re making synchronous calls without pagination:

The error occurs after exactly 60 seconds, suggesting a hard timeout limit. We need to complete these quarterly syncs within our maintenance window. Has anyone dealt with large succession planning data volumes and found effective strategies for handling API rate limits and timeout constraints?

Have you considered using asynchronous processing with webhooks? Dayforce supports callback URLs for long-running operations. You submit the job, get a job ID back immediately, and then Dayforce notifies your endpoint when processing completes. This approach works much better for bulk operations than waiting for synchronous responses. The webhook configuration requires setting up an HTTPS endpoint on your side, but it’s worth the effort for large data volumes.

Rate limiting is also critical here. Dayforce APIs have rate limits that vary by endpoint - typically 100 requests per minute for most succession planning endpoints. If you’re batching 100 records at a time across 1,200 records, that’s 12 API calls. Should complete in under a minute theoretically, but you need exponential backoff retry logic for 429 responses. We use a retry strategy with delays of 5, 15, 45 seconds before failing permanently.

I’d also recommend implementing proper monitoring and logging around these sync operations. Track response times, batch sizes, and failure rates. We discovered that certain times of day had significantly better API performance - running our bulk syncs during off-peak hours (early morning UTC) reduced failures by about 40%. The Dayforce platform experiences varying load throughout the day.

You need a comprehensive approach addressing all four critical areas to solve this properly.

API Pagination Strategy: Implement cursor-based pagination with batch sizes of 50-100 records maximum. Structure your requests like this:

Also implement comprehensive error logging that captures the batch ID, timestamp, error code, and remaining records so you can resume from failure points rather than restarting the entire sync.
