ThoughtSpot vs Tableau vs Power BI for AI-driven self-service analytics

We’re in the thick of evaluating next-gen BI platforms and the strategic question keeps coming back to AI-native versus traditional BI with AI bolted on. Our current setup is Power BI, but we’re hitting friction around ad-hoc questions and the bottleneck on our analytics team is becoming unsustainable. Leadership wants to know if we should stick with Power BI and lean into its Copilot features, move to something like Tableau with its agentic roadmap, or go all-in on a search-first platform like ThoughtSpot.

The dilemma isn’t just features. It’s about whether our organization is ready for a conversational analytics model versus incremental improvements on dashboards. We’ve got a decent data warehouse on Snowflake and reasonably clean data, but our semantic layer is patchy—some metrics are defined consistently, others vary by department. We also know that real adoption depends on change management, not just the tech. One camp says we should consolidate around what we know and modernize incrementally. The other says we’re just postponing the inevitable shift to self-service.

Curious how others have approached this decision, especially if you’ve migrated platforms or dealt with semantic layer investments as part of the journey. What drove your choice and how did adoption actually play out?

If you’re on Snowflake already, you’re ahead of the game. We’re running Tableau on top of Databricks and the zero-copy architecture has been a huge win—no extract refreshes, no stale data, queries hit the warehouse directly. Tableau’s betting heavily on agentic analytics and their semantic layer is solid, but the tooling still feels dashboard-first with AI features layered on top. That might be fine if your culture is comfortable with dashboards and you want to evolve incrementally. But if you’re trying to fundamentally change how people interact with data, search-first platforms have a steeper learning curve but higher ceiling.

If your semantic layer is patchy, fix that before you migrate platforms. Seriously. We tried to skip that step and it bit us hard. The 80/20 rule is real—80 percent of the effort in making AI-driven BI work is data quality and governance, only 20 percent is the AI tech itself. Get your metric definitions consistent across departments, document your business logic, version-control your data models, and establish clear ownership for each data domain. Then pick your platform. Otherwise you’re just moving the mess to a shinier tool and the problems will follow you.

From an infrastructure perspective, be realistic about query volumes and response times. Conversational analytics generates way more queries than dashboard consumption—we saw a 300 percent increase in query load when we moved from static reports to search-driven analytics. If your warehouse isn’t sized for that or if you don’t have proper caching strategies, users will hit latency issues and adoption will stall. In-memory computation and aggressive query optimization matter a lot. We ended up having to tune our Snowflake warehouse configuration and set up better resource monitors to keep costs in check.

One consideration that doesn’t get enough attention: explainability and audit trails. When Finance runs a report that feeds into a board presentation or regulatory filing, we need to be able to trace every number back to source and understand the calculation logic. Some of the newer AI-native tools are great at generating answers but not always transparent about how they got there. Make sure whatever you choose supports proper lineage and lets users drill into the logic. We’ve had situations where an AI-generated insight was technically correct but used a definition of revenue that wasn’t aligned with our accounting standards, and that’s a non-starter.
