Use Case for CAD Integration to Enhance Product Data Hub in PLM

Our engineering team struggled with disconnected CAD files and inconsistent document versions across departments. As an integration lead, I was tasked with creating a unified product data hub that automatically synchronized CAD data and related documents to improve collaboration and reduce errors. CAD integration enables seamless transfer of design data into the product data hub. Centralized product data hub consolidates CAD files, documents, and metadata. Revision control ensures CAD data updates are tracked and managed. Document control workflows maintain data integrity and access permissions. Integration supports cross-functional collaboration and reduces rework.

Impact on production readiness has been significant. With CAD data centralized in the product data hub, manufacturing can access the latest designs, BOMs, and work instructions in one place. This has reduced setup time and improved first-pass yield. When design changes occur, we’re notified immediately and can assess the impact on production. This real-time visibility has improved our operational efficiency.

Technical challenges of CAD-PLM integration include dealing with large file sizes, multiple CAD formats, and ensuring real-time synchronization. We implemented native connectors between our CAD systems and PLM, enabling automatic check-in of CAD files and metadata extraction. We also set up a caching mechanism to improve performance. The biggest challenge was ensuring data consistency during synchronization, which we addressed through validation rules and error handling.
